Things You Need

  • Plastic bottle
  • Lighter
  • Nail / screw driver
  • Straw
  • Post its
  • Foam Ear plug
  • Scissors
  • Paper/ribbon

Preparation

Gather materials.

Let’s Do It

  1. Prepare the Bottle Cap:
This part should be done by an adult for very young ones. Use a lighter to heat a nail or screwdriver, and make a hole in the center of the bottle cap. The hole should be just big enough to fit the straw. Insert the straw into the hole.

  2. Cut the Straw:
Use a post-it to measure where to cut the protruding part of the straw. It should be slightly longer than the post-it. Cut it accordingly.

  3. Create the Rocket:
Use the leftover piece of straw to guide the rocket-making process. Attach the sticky part of the post-it to the straw and wrap it tightly to curl the paper. Unwrap it and then re-wrap it, ensuring the sticky part is the last to wrap around to fix the tube shape. Secure it with a piece of tape around the top to make it extra secure.

  4. Nose Cone:
Cut a foam earplug in half. Roll the tip portion between your fingers to make it small enough to fit into the rocket’s paper tube. Insert it into the top and let it sit for 20 seconds to expand into place.

  5. Tail:
Affix a small piece of paper or ribbon to the end of the rocket with a piece of tape, creating a tail. Making a small split in the tail helps the rocket fly smoothly.

  6. Ready to Fly:
Place the paper rocket on the straw, adjust the trajectory, hit the bottle, and let it fly.
