Ice Cream Shake

AGES: 3+                   ACTIVITY TIME: 15 Mins +                   PREP. TIME: 5 mins

A great summertime activity. Easy, fun, and a great science learning opportunity.

Things You Need

  • 1/2 cup(125ml) milk
  • 1/2 cup cream(125ml)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • Ice (about 3 cups)
  • 6 tbsp salt
  • 2 ziplock bags (1 x med. 1x large)
  • bubble mailer large
  • measuring cup
  • measuring spoons
  • toppings (optional)

Preparation
Let’s prep. You will need to get your materials organized and things in place to ensure your activity runs smoothly.

  1. Gather the ingredients. It’s advisable to measure the milk and cream in advance and store them in something like paper cups. Putting sugar and salt in a plastic container for easy spooning is also highly recommended.
  2. For very little ones, it’s helpful to have the medium-sized plastic bag held open in a cup. This way, they can put all the ingredients in themselves.
  3. Have some music ready. “Shake It Off” would be a good choice.

Let’s Do It

  1. Put 125ml of milk and 125ml of cream into the medium-sized ziplock bag. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla, then zip the bag closed. Double-check to ensure it is closed properly, as you don’t want salt getting in there.
  2. Place about 3 cups of ice (which can be made with 500mls of water) into the large ziplock bag. Add 6 tablespoons of salt to the ice.
  3. Insert the bag with the milk mixture into the bag with ice and zip it up. Make sure to double-check that it is closed properly.
  4. Place those bags into the bubble mailer and seal it.
  5. Play some music and start shaking while busting out dance moves. It will take about 5-8 minutes. Check from time to time and stop when it has reached your desired ice cream consistency.
  6. Remove the bag with the milk mixture and rinse it briefly in cold water. Don’t do it for too long; it melts quickly.
  7. Cut the corner off the bag and squeeze the ice cream into a bowl. Add sprinkles or any other topping you like.
  8. EAT!
