CD Floater

AGES: 3+                   ACTIVITY TIME: 10 Mins +                   PREP. TIME: 5 mins

An excellent way to demonstrate how air can be used to reduce friction.

Things You Need

  • CD
  • hose/pipe valve
  • water bottle
  • a balloon
  • twistie tie
  • a box cutter or scissors
  • a glue gun

Preparation

Gather all the materials and have them ready near a power outlet as you’ll need it for the glue gun. It’s a good idea to plug in the glue gun 5-10 minutes in advance as it takes some time to warm up.

Let’s Do It

For young ones, I recommend having an adult handle steps 1-3.

  1. Cut the Water Bottle:
Cut the top off the water bottle approximately 3 cm down from the cap.
  2. Attach Bottle to CD:
Use the glue gun to securely attach the bottle part to the center of a CD, ensuring it is airtight.
  3. Attach Hose Valve:
Insert the hose valve into the top of the bottle part, securing it with a generous amount of glue to ensure an airtight seal.
  4. Attach Balloon:
Once the glue is set, place a balloon on the exposed end of the valve and secure it with a twist tie.
  5. Decorate:
Add decorations using permanent markers or any other preferred materials.
  6. Inflate:
Blow it up, ensuring the valve is open during inflation and closed when you have sufficient air.
  7. Ready to Launch:
Place it on a flat surface and open the valve to release air. The valve allows for easy fine-tuning to optimize its floating power.
